Brexit: A senseless vote

 British citizens voted to leave the European Union on June 23, with 51.9 percent of voters choosing to exit. Migration was the cornerstone of the Leave campaign, which objected to the European Union’s insistence on the free movement of  labor, capital, goods and services.

The results of the referendum have ushered in greater political uncertainty, a heightened sense of financial market risk and deep division in British society.

For the first time  huge numbers of people from  nations stretching from Scandinavia to Portugal  have come together to form a bigger society without anyone using force to make them to do so. Immigration: a turning point for Europe

Europe has seen a surge in migration, mainly due to the  increased number of people from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan who made the journey thorough Greece and the Balkans. This has led to political problems both within and between countries and has undermined  existing EU immigration agreements that are unlikely to survive in their current form. If the  first approach to the problem was centered on how accommodate the influx of refugees then the focus has shifted to stemming that flow and restricting entry.

The innovation performance of the EU countries

14 July 2016. The European Commission released the 2016 results of the European Innovation Scoreboard,  the Regional Innovation Scoreboard and the Innobarometer.

The main findings are that EU innovation is catching up with Japan and the US, Sweden is once again the innovation leader, and Latvia has become the fastest growing innovator.
